Frequently Asked Questions

Q. Do I need any previous experience or specific qualifications?

A. No. The programmes are structured in a way that assumes no prior knowledge or experience. However, participants are encouraged to seek ways to utilize everything they already know and all the resources they already have, e.g. personal qualities, experience with people, skills both learned and those aquired throughout life, to enhance their practice of the art and science of hypnotherapy.

Q. Is there any personal study commitment outside of the course?

A. Yes, The programmes have a requirement of an additional 350 hours of personal study. The personal study element greatly enhances personal knowledge and skill as you progress towards successful competition of the programme. You will gain significant benefit from undertaking this very interesting and worthwhile activity.

Personal study hours can comprise of:

Practice with volunteers,

Writing assignments including writing up of notes, devising 'scripts', etc,

Internet Research,

Discussions with peers, either via phone, email or face to face,

Attendance at a practice group (either supervised or non supervised),

Discussion/practice with other students,

Keeping a self development journal of how you are evolving as a result of insights and experience gained from the course.

Q. Are there any other costs apart from the stated course fees?

A. Course fees cover the face to face tuition, plus course materials, on going assessments and certification. You will have to purchase any books or stationery you require. Also you will have to fund your own travel to and from the training and any food or accommodation required.

Q. How can I pay course fees?

A. Payment can be made by cheque, credit card or monthly standing order. Check out the package discount for the combination of Hypnotherapy & NLP Practitioner training.

Q. If I don't get a place on the course, will a deposit be charged?

A. No. If for any reason Hypno UK can not accept your application to join a course, any monies paid in advance will be refunded in full.

If however, you are accepted on to a course and later decide to cancel an administration fee may be made.

Q. What type of problems will I be able to deal with and what will the course qualify me to do?

A. Successful completion of the course will qualify you as a professional clinical hypnotherapist, with knowledge of cognitive, suggestion based and analytical methods. Some of the typical presenting problems that respond to these methods are: anxiety, fears & phobias, weight management, motivation, smoking cessation, confidence, etc. However, there are no guarantees of success for clients. In the same way that a doctor writes a perscription but has no influence over whether the patient takes the medication as directed....Or even whether the medication will react with the patients personal bio-chemistry as anticipated, so the hypnotherapist can make no guarantee that a particular intervention will be effective with any particular client.

Q. Can I make a living from hypnotherapy?

A. This is perfectly feasible. Indeed as hypnotherapy becomes more acceptable and mainstream more and more people will be seeking the benefits. Hypnotherapists charge anywhere between £30-£250 per hour depending on experience, specialism and location. Most Hypnotherapists work on a self employed basis in their own private practice. Therefore potential income will depend on personal factors

Q. What do I need to set up in private practice as a hypnotherapist?

A. At present, unfortunately there are no statutory requirements. HOWEVER, the minimum required to join The General Hypnotherapy Register and / or The Hypnotherapy Association (professional bodies  with meaningful standards) is successful completion of a validated training programme. Such as The Hypno-uk diploma. membership of such bodies also provides access to professional practice insurance. Without which it would be impossible to practice ethically.

Q. How is learning assessed and what is the pass rate?

A. We always aim for 100% providing participants meet the required continuous assessment criteria.

Q. How long has Hypno UK been running?

A. Hypno UK established this programme in 2005.

Q. How many students will there be on each course?

A. There is at present a maximum of 12 participants on each course.

Q. Will I get letters after my name?

A. Yes. Graduates can use Hyp.Dip.GHR. Reg.GQHP providing they register with the GHR. Also for those who join the Hypnotherery Association.(HA.licentiate)

Q. Where are the courses held?

A. Hummingbird House Centre of Positive Change, in Chelmsford, Essex. www.hummingbirdeffect.com

Q. How do Hypno UK programmes compare to others?

A. The quality of all Hypno UK training courses is very high. Some schools and colleges offer 3 year programmes of hypnotherapy and 'psychotherapy'. However, this is not automatically a measure of any significance. Don't be fooled into thinking that longer courses offer statutory recognition or specialist training in psychtherapy. They are integrative just as Hypno UK programmes are and merely offer an overview of psychological perspectives. The Hypno-uk diploma offers a solid professional training in the real practical applications of hypnotherapy. Graduates can apply what they have learned to working with a broad range of clients on a broad range of issues.

Q. Are Hypnotherapists regulated by the government?

A No. The hypnotherapy profession has been advised to organize itself through self regulation. In other words, the UK government does not appear to intend implementing any statutory regulation to legislate hypnotherapists in the near future. Even in the context of forthcoming state regulation of recognized psychological therapies (e.g. counselling and psychotherapy) the government has not yet decided which regulatory institution (whether it is BACP, UKCP or the BPS) will have its particular conditions adopted as a national standard.

The General Hypnotherapy Register, The General Hypnotherapy Standards Council and The Hypnotherapy Association all aim to be at the forefront of all discussions on any future developments concerning statutory regulation of hypnotherapists. In the mean time the best advice to hypnotherapy practitioners is that they should,

* Be appropriately registered through a professional organisation that has meaningful standards (e.g. The GHR or HA).

* Have adequate insurance to practice (e.g. obtainable for registrants via the GHR and HA).

* Strive to be involved in continuous professional development. (This is offered via Denise Collins Enterprises at Hummingbird House)

* Be mindful to work within the scope of their particular knowledge, understanding and experience.

* In their dealings with clients, prospective clients and colleagues, aim to be honest, courteous, professional and at all times promote a first-rate image of hypnotherapy as a serious therapeutic pursuit.
